Teachers' Evening Out!
April 13-19 was the Week of the Young Child and the Cincinnati Association for the Education of Young Children (CAEYC) organized the event to recognize the teachers. Later in the week Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory will make a formal proclamation and presentation at City Hall. For years the organization has done things to promote the importance of high quality education for young children.
"Since teachers work so hard with
children everyday, we wanted to do something that would really be about
them," said Mary Richards, CAEYC board member and toddler master teacher
with Children's Hospital "Children's for Children" program.
"The goal is pampering with hand massages, food, drinks, giveaways,
networking and some learning; sharing ideas, getting inspired, maybe
rejuvenated to do the work."
"It's a kind of a giving back to the teachers that work with the young children," said Susan Ricciardi, preschool teacher at Hyde Park United Methodist Preschool. "It's a day of pampering; you can have a hand massage and camaraderie with the other teachers."
Preschool teachers came from all
over Cincinnati to celebrate the Week of the Young Child at Mt. Washington
Presbyterian Preschool Wednesday, April 16th. They were treated to an
afternoon and evening of pampering.
They showed real passion for the education and development of the toddlers
through five year olds they teach. They enjoyed food, drink, artwork,
teaching games and hand massages but still inspired each other with new
ideas on how to teach and develop fundamental learning skills.
"We still have the education piece here with creating games so they have
that opportunity," said Richards. "But this is really just about them."
Lisa Gruber and Lori Schott, both U.C. juniors in education, demonstrated
games designed to develop fundamental cognitive skills in math and
socialization.
Barbara Wolf is the director of Mt. Washington Presbyterian Preschool and
led the teachers on tours of the classrooms there.
"It was appreciation of what we do," said Jo Louis, a 17 year veteran
preschool teacher. "It's very relaxing."
They are not babysitters. They are professionals with college degrees and
master's degrees in education and child development. They are energetic,
caring and creative in their approach to teaching our children. Many have
been dedicated teachers for more than 15 years. For one day the focus was on
them.
"For them it's usually all about children," said Richards. "We want them to
be inspired, get some new ideas, relax, see familiar faces, meet new people,
take home some goodies and just really have a good time! This is really just
about enjoying ourselves this evening and not talking about expectations."
