Mimi Brodsky Chenfeld

Mimi’s is a regular
guest on Open Line (WOSU AM) talking about creative education. She
teaches her course, “Arts Across the Curriculum” summers at
Otterbein College, Westerville, Ohio
Born and raised in New
York City, Mimi attended Hofstra University, received her BA from
Russel State and her MA in Elementary Education from State
University of New York at Oneonta.
Mimi began her teaching
career in 1956, teaching fourth grade in upstate NY. Since then,
she has worked with people of all ages, from birth to death, from
Headstart to Upward Bound, from New York to Hawaii, from Florida to
Alaska, from Puerto Rico to Canada.
She travels extensively
sharing her messages with teachers, administrators, families and
community leaders in workshops, seminars, conferences and
conventions.
In Columbus, Ohio where
she now resides, she is on the staff of the Early Childhood
Department of the Leo Yassenoff Jewish Community Center, the Greater
Columbus Arts Council’s Artists’ in the Schools program, the Hillel
Foundation at The Ohio State University leading the International
Dance program and with DepArtures, working with the Columbus Public
Schools and the Columbus Museum of Art. She is also on the staff of
the Days of Creation Arts Program and on the Columbus Metropolitan
Library summer childrens’ program. She serves on the Editorial
Boards of Early Childhood Education Journal and r.w.t. (the magazine
for reading-writing-thinking).
Mimi has published
numerous poems, stories and articles. One of her children’s novels,
The House at Twelve Rose Street was adapted for a network TV
special. The National Association for the Education of Young
Children (NAEYC) published her first collection, Teaching In The Key
of Life. Redleaf Press published her second collection, Teaching By
Heart in 2001. Heinemann published the 3rd edition of her book,
Creative Experiences for Young Children in 2002. Her recent book,
Celebrating Young Children and Their Teachers (2007) was
co-published by Redleaf Press and NAEYC.
Many of her essays have
been published in books and special theme journals including:
Working With the Young Child (University Press of America), Reading
and Writing Quarterly (Overcoming Learning Difficulties), Teaching
and Joy (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development-ASCD)
and What Works With Children (Peachtree Press and Save the
Children).
Mimi was honored not
only to be named one of the Columbus YWCA’s Woman of Achievement in
1991, but also received the Ohio A.E.Y.C.’s prestigious Citizen
Award, Author from Ohio Award (1994) and the Ohioan Library
Association’s Citation for Distinguished Service To Ohio In The
Humanities and Education (1994). In 1995, she received the Columbus
A.E.Y.C.’s Citizen’s Award and the Honored Community Artist Award by
the Alliance of Ohio Community Arts Agencies. In 2002 she received
Columbus Ohio’s Southside Settlement House Arts Freedom Award.
