Parents are the Child’s First Teacher: So Who Put the School in Charge?

Daniele Bond and Janice Hendrix, Assistant Professors of Early Childhood Education and Martha Patricia Perez-Enriquez, Academic Director - Spanish Program – University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH

We all know that parents are the child’s first teacher and the home is the first school, so why do we cut the child off from that initial and oh so valuable learning experience – the Family?  This workshop will address that question and help you understand the importance of working in partnership with families. We will cover four topics: understanding the value of culture, effective communication, bridging the gap between home and school, and creating a sense of community - ways to effectively engage families within the classroom.  Workshop attendees will participate in hands-on activities, interactive discussion, and receive a wealth of knowledge and resources to take back to the classroom.

One, Two, Three – Hop, Turn, Freeze!  Movement Activities to Enhance Your Early Childhood Environment - Connie Dow, Consultant and Author of Dance, Turn, Hop, Learn! Enriching Movement Activities for Preschoolers (Redleaf Press, 2006) and One, Two, What Can I Do? Dance and Music for the Whole Day (Redleaf Press April, 2011) Cincinnati, OH

Children love and need to move, so why not incorporate dance as a natural part of what you teach every day. Dance is a lively and playful art form full of useful tools for teaching virtually any subject. Research shows the importance of keeping children moving throughout the day and of having opportunities for kinesthetic learning in the classroom. Participants will become familiar with teaching structured movement activities so children have an opportunity to learn and understand personal versus shared space, how their bodies move, control the direction and speed at which they are moving, and increase their strength, balance, and coordination.  So get up & get moving.

Participants will discuss the values communicated and the specific ways they are communicated. Time will also be given for participants to define and reflect on their own values and how those values can be communicated in their spaces.
